Mitigation
To avoid forgetting your Pigeon password, we recommend that it be
stored in a reputable password
manager.
The National
Cyber Security Centre, a UK government agency, recommend using a password manager to store
passwords. The National
Institute of Standards and Technology, a non-regulatory US agency,
give their tacit
approval of password managers in one of their standards.
A whitepaper by Ian Maddox and Kyle Moschetto summarises industry
advice on passwords as follows:
"Use a password manager. Use unique passwords for every site and
application. Make long, random passwords. Use multi-word
passphrases. Use salted passphrases or algorithms for security
questions. Trust and review authoritative sources for best
practices."
Modern
password security for users
There are also drawbacks
of password managers that you should be aware of, and it is important
to note that no approach to password storage gives absolute
security.
